Roots & Remedies

Roots & Remedies: The Legacy of Agriculture & Cannabis in MD

Curatorial Statement

"Roots & Remedies" invites you to delve into the rich and complex tapestry of Maryland's agricultural and cannabis history, a narrative deeply woven into the state's social, economic, and cultural fabric. This exhibition is not merely a historical retrospective, but a dynamic exploration of the enduring legacies that shape our present and inform our future.

For centuries, Maryland's fertile lands have nurtured a diverse agricultural heritage, from tobacco fields that fueled early economies to the burgeoning cultivation of hemp and, more recently, cannabis. This exhibition seeks to illuminate the interconnectedness of these agricultural endeavors, revealing the stories of the people who have worked on the land, the innovations they have fostered, and the challenges they have overcome.

"Roots & Remedies" moves beyond simple documentation, aiming to:

  • Unearth the Historical Roots:      We trace the evolution of agriculture in Maryland, highlighting the      pivotal role of tobacco, the impact of changing agricultural practices,      and the often-overlooked contributions of marginalized communities.
  • Explore the Cannabis      Renaissance: We examine the resurgence of cannabis, from its historical      use to its contemporary legal landscape, exploring its medicinal,      industrial, and recreational potential.
  • Illuminate the Intersections:      We reveal the intricate connections between traditional agriculture and      the burgeoning cannabis industry, highlighting shared challenges and      opportunities.
  • Center Community and Culture:      We showcase the stories of farmers, activists, entrepreneurs, and artists      who have shaped Maryland's agricultural and cannabis landscape,      celebrating their resilience and innovation.
  • Investigate Remedies and      Futures: We explore the therapeutic and economic potential of cannabis,      while also acknowledging the complex social and ethical considerations      surrounding its use. We encourage dialogue about the future of agriculture      and cannabis in Maryland, fostering a space for critical reflection and      forward-thinking solutions.

Through a diverse array of artworks, "Roots & Remedies" offers a multi-sensory experience that engages the mind and sparks conversation. We invite you to join us on this journey of discovery, to connect with the roots of our past, and to envision the remedies for our future. This exhibition is a testament to the enduring power of the land and the transformative potential of its bounty, a celebration of Maryland's agricultural and cannabis heritage, and a call to cultivate a more equitable and sustainable future.

Artist Cohort Application

The Black Art Today Foundation's Artist Cohort

The term "artist cohort" typically refers to a group or community of artists who come together to collaborate, support each other, and share resources and knowledge. These cohorts can take various forms, such as formal artist residencies, informal collectives, or even online communities.

The Black Art Today Foundation Artist Cohort provides a supportive environment where artists can connect with like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and receive feedback on their work. We offer opportunities for collaboration, joint exhibitions, workshops, and networking, which can be beneficial for artists looking to expand their artistic practice and professional network.

Being part of The Black Art Today Foundation Artist Cohort can offer several advantages, including:

1. Community and support: Artists often work in isolation, so being part of a cohort provides a sense of community and belonging. It allows artists to connect with peers who understand their creative journey and challenges, fostering a supportive environment.

2. Collaboration: Artist cohorts encourage collaboration among members. Artists can work together on projects, share skills, and combine their expertise to create joint artworks or exhibitions. Collaborative projects can lead to new creative directions and expand artistic horizons.

3. Skill sharing and learning: Artist cohorts often organize workshops, skill-sharing sessions, and critique sessions where members can learn from each other. This exchange of knowledge and feedback can be invaluable for personal growth and artistic development.

4. Networking and exposure: Being part of an artist cohort can provide networking opportunities with other artists, curators, gallery owners, and art professionals. These connections can lead to exhibition opportunities, art sales, and increased visibility within the art community.

5. Shared resources: Cohorts may pool resources such as studio spaces, equipment, or materials, making them more accessible and affordable for individual members. This shared infrastructure can benefit artists, particularly those who might have limited resources on their own.

Becoming a member of  The Black Art Today Foundation's Artist Cohort is a formal process that includes an application and selection process. If you are an artist interested in joining please complete the 2024 Black Art Today Foundation's Artist Cohort Application.
