Harriet Smith is a self-taught abstract artist with a passion for creating striking color combinations and textured surfaces with oil paints on canvas. Her artwork has been described as “instinctive and melodic” and displayed in local group exhibitions in Maryland and Virginia and internationally in Italy.
Harriet attributes her love of photography and music to her creativity and creations alike – and as a result of this intertwinement, she has been able to create art that is personal and inviting. She has a keen eye for uncovering conceptual images portrayed in still photos and draws influence from her surroundings and imagination. Those inspirations guide her work with color layering and movement and designing shapes and forms that appeal to the visual senses and subjective and objective interpretations. She sets out to balance spontaneity with intentionality to create an overlapping effect that generates energy in the depiction of her art.
A native of Washington, DC, Harriet currently resides in Prince George’s County, Maryland. In addition to her artistic aptitude, she is an educator and holds a doctoral degree from The George Washington University and a master’s and bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland University College and Hampton Institute, respectively. When she’s not educating others, she’s “creating space through art.”
